Religions and Spirituality
Where religions come in
Religions are man-made divisions, groupings, structures — call them whatever you like — that are built around the Gods and Goddesses. The fact that these Gods were incarnated in specific civilizations at specific times caused human beings to believe that the God they "knew" was the only true God — the only source of spirituality. The human ego sought to claim control over the Power of the Gods and their teachings by refusing to accept other Gods. The battle for supremacy — the human ego-driven desire to "be more spiritual" than all others led to the formation of different religions.
Further complicating matters, human beings' lack of maturity in being able to comprehend the message these Gods delivered in their times caused humans to misinterpret the Gods' teachings. They got caught up in devising techniques, rituals and other means of achieving spirituality, rather than focusing on the end state of spirituality. And in doing so, they perhaps diluted spirituality to mental levels of comprehension and thinking. This is why religions tend to be somewhat narrower views of spirituality.
One does not have to be religious in order to be spiritual or to achieve spiritual enlightenment. One only needs to believe in and respect the existence of all Gods and the commonality between their teachings and messages. One only needs to awaken the spirit within to be spiritual.
Doesn’t belief in Gods and Goddesses make one religious?
No, it makes one spiritual. But in the process of trying to reach God through the complicated structures of religion, we can get so caught up in religiosity that we completely lose our way. So, if you are lost in a church, temple, mosque or other structure without understanding spirituality or feeling the Spirit within you, it's likely that you are religious but not spiritual.
All religions were once well-intentioned. They were intended to be a path to spirituality and enlightenment. However, human beings distorted and escalated these structures and rituals to higher complexities than was necessary. Many began to lose sight of the end goal: Spiritual enlightenment and finding the Spirit and Gods within oneself.
Do you realize that the Gods themselves never belonged to any religion or "group?" They were universal. Perhaps it's a sign of arrogance to classify Gods as belonging to specific religions. (For example, we have “Hindu” Gods, “Muslim” Gods etc..) It is human beings who are “Hindu,” “Muslim” or any other specific religion — not the Gods themselves. I believe that Gods never intended the religions of today to be formed. They only wanted their message — the truth about spirituality — to reach human beings and be followed.
